Title: A Primer on Choice of Business Entities for Estate Planners
Summary: Please join us for a roundtable discussion that will focus on the selection, formation, and maintenance of the most popular business entities used today. We will discuss how to select the appropriate entity with a focus on limiting potential owner liability, tax burden, and administrative burden, along with the choice between forming your entity in Massachusetts or Delaware. Additionally, we will review the basics of how to form an entity. Finally, we will outline the importance of complying with annual maintenance requirements for your entity and provide guidelines on how to do so.
Moderator Bio: Jay M. Pabian is a managing partner of Pabian & Russell, LLC, and has more than 25 years experience as a tax lawyer and certified public accountant. He provides sophisticated yet practical legal and tax advice and representation to his clients. Jay's areas of concentration include business and employment law, tax law, wills and trusts, estate and wealth preservation planning, asset protection planning, special needs planning, business succession planning, estate and trust administration, and franchise law. His clients consist of high-net worth individuals, senior executives, privately held businesses, law and accounting firms, medical and dental practices, financial service providers, franchisee associations, supply-chain purchasing and distribution entities, and health and non-profit organizations.activities in the six New England states.

Summary: Many clients fear that their gifts to children and grandchildren lead inevitably to entitlement. Wise giving can avoid that result and turn gifts into a force for growth. We will discuss some of the key practices of wise giving. We will then lead a discussion aimed at helping clients attain greater clarity about their goals and strategies.
Moderator Bios:
Dr. Keith Whitaker is an educator and founding Associate with Wise Counsel Research Associates, a think-tank and consultancy. He helps families plan succession, develop next generation talent, and communicate around estate planning. Keith served as a Managing Director at Wells Fargo. He has also served as a researcher at the Boston College Center on Wealth and Philanthropy, a private trustee, a director of a private foundation, and a philosophy professor. Keith’s writings and commentary have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Financial Times, and Philanthropy Magazine. He holds a Ph.D. in Social Thought from the University of Chicago and a BA and MA in Classics and Philosophy from Boston University.
Dr. Susan Massenzio is a psychologist and founding Associate with Wise Counsel Research Associates, a think-tank and consultancy. Susan has consulted extensively with family leaders and philanthropists. She helps families enhance their communication, decision making, next generation members, and philanthropy. Susan also has extensive experience consulting to senior executives and leadership teams of Fortune 500 financial services firms. Susan was the Senior Psychologist for John Hancock Financial Services, a Senior Vice President for Wells Fargo, and a professor and program director at Northeastern University. She holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Northwestern University and a BA in Sociology and Education from Simmons College. |

Moderator Bio: Susan Ogrodnik-Smith is a 26-year veteran of the property casualty insurance industry and is the Chief Sales Officer for Personal Insurance and oversees the Private Client Group at HUB International New England, LLC. In her current role, Susan works with family office managers, high net-worth families and trusted advisor teams to assess the unique personal insurance exposures they and their clients face. Her focus is designing comprehensive insurance programs that incorporate clients’ primary residences and vacation homes, automobiles, valuable collections of art work, antiques, jewelry and silver; coverage for watercraft and aircraft and determining adequate liability limits.

Moderator Bios: Stephen Liss is a Director for the Wealth Advisory business in the Americas for the Wealth and Investment Management division of Barclays. Mr. Liss advises high net worth clients and related entities on domestic and international tax, multi-generational estate planning, wealth preservation strategies, and planned charitable giving. Mr. Liss is a frequent author and speaker. Prior to joining Barclays, Mr. Liss was a Partner at the international law firm Withers Bergman LLP. Mr. Liss has been admitted to practice law in New York State, Connecticut and the United States Tax Court. He is also a member of the American Bar Association (Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Section), the Connecticut Bar Association, and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.
David Szabo, Investment Representative at Barclays, focuses on serving sophisticated high net worth investors and multi-family offices from a holistic wealth management perspective. Our team, with over 50 years experience in wealth management, leverages the Barclays platform to provide solutions across trust and estate planning, investment and corporate banking and cross-border activities. Previously, David worked with Chief Executive of Wealth and Investment Management Thomas L. Kalaris in London, assisting in the management of the global wealth business.

Title: Understanding the Affordable Care Act
Summary: The Affordable Care Act more commonly known as the "Obamacare Act” has created a Health Care Surtax. We will discuss the potential pitfalls and planning considerations resulting from this act. The topics will include the types of income this will affect and planning opportunities for qualified retirement Plans, tax exempt deferred investments, Roth conversions and charitable trusts.
Moderator Bio: Yasmin Causer is a Managing Director at tonneson + co and has over twenty years of experience. She is comfortable working with wealthy individuals and families that have complex financial structures with complex federal, multi-state income tax and foreign reporting requirements. She leads the firm’s Plus Services group that focuses on helping wealthy individuals and families manage, monitor and evaluate their financial situation. Yasmin began her career at an international public accounting firm in Boston, MA. Yasmin received a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (Cum Laude) from Bentley University and a Master of Science in Taxation from Golden Gate University. |
