Title: Beyond the Exemption: Helping Families Give Wisely

Summary: Many clients fear that their gifts to children and grandchildren lead inevitably to entitlement. Wise giving can avoid that result and turn gifts into a force for growth. We will discuss some of the key practices of wise giving. We will then lead a discussion aimed at helping clients attain greater clarity about their goals and strategies.

Moderator Bio:

Dr. Keith Whitaker is an educator and founding Associate with Wise Counsel Research Associates, a think-tank and consultancy. He helps families plan succession, develop next generation talent, and communicate around estate planning. Keith served as a Managing Director at Wells Fargo. He has also served as a researcher at the Boston College Center on Wealth and Philanthropy, a private trustee, a director of a private foundation, and a philosophy professor. Keith’s writings and commentary have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Financial Times, and Philanthropy Magazine. He holds a Ph.D. in Social Thought from the University of Chicago and a BA and MA in Classics and Philosophy from Boston University.

Dr. Susan Massenzio is a psychologist and founding Associate with Wise Counsel Research Associates, a think-tank and consultancy. Susan has consulted extensively with family leaders and philanthropists. She helps families enhance their communication, decision making, next generation members, and philanthropy. Susan also has extensive experience consulting to senior executives and leadership teams of Fortune 500 financial services firms. Susan was the Senior Psychologist for John Hancock Financial Services, a Senior Vice President for Wells Fargo, and a professor and program director at Northeastern University. She holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Northwestern University and a BA in Sociology and Education from Simmons College.

Moderator Bios:
Stephen Liss is a Director for the Wealth Advisory business in the Americas for the Wealth and Investment Management division of Barclays. Mr. Liss advises high net worth clients and related entities on domestic and international tax, multi-generational estate planning, wealth preservation strategies, and planned charitable giving. Mr. Liss is a frequent author and speaker. Prior to joining Barclays, Mr. Liss was a Partner at the international law firm Withers Bergman LLP. Mr. Liss has been admitted to practice law in New York State, Connecticut and the United States Tax Court. He is also a member of the American Bar Association (Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Section), the Connecticut Bar Association, and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.

David Szabo, Investment Representative at Barclays, focuses on serving sophisticated high net worth investors and multi-family offices from a holistic wealth management perspective. Our team, with over 50 years experience in wealth management, leverages the Barclays platform to provide solutions across trust and estate planning, investment and corporate banking and cross-border activities. Previously, David worked with Chief Executive of Wealth and Investment Management Thomas L. Kalaris in London, assisting in the management of the global wealth business.
