Session 1:
Utilizing Reverse Mortgages to Fund In-Home Care
Steve will use case studies to illustrate strategies for funding in-home care using a HECM (home equity conversion mortgage) standby line of credit, including eligibility factors, cost, growth and repayment. Steve will also discuss use of HECMs with trusts and life estates, review recent HECM updates and changes, and examine some reverse mortgage program options.

Stephen R. Pepe, JD
is a Loan Officer and Outside Account Executive with Reverse Mortgage Funding, LLC. He earned his JD from Suffolk University Law School in 1998 and previously practiced law in the areas of residential real estate conveyancing, land use, summary process and estate planning. Steve is a former AARP Foundation-certified reverse mortgage counselor and an active member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the Boston Estate Planning Council, the Norfolk and Plymouth Estate Planning Council, and the Boston Society of Financial Service Professionals. Steve is a frequent contributor in print and radio and a CLE panelist on the topic of reverse mortgages.

Session 2:
Deepening Client Relationships Through Philanthropy: Lessons Learned from Charitable Bequests of Louis Armstrong, Ty Cobb, Ernest Hemingway and Other Cultural Icons.
Estate planning is an opportunity for clients to meaningfully reflect on their lives. Mary will discuss key issues advisors should raise with clients who are considering incorporating charitable support into their planning, using stories of famous cultural icons to illustrate her points.

Mary C. Moran, Esq. is currently a Director, Planned Giving at Massachusetts General Hospital. A graduate of Boston College and Georgetown University Law Center, she started her career in the private client department
of Palmer & Dodge, LLP. For the last 25 years, she has worked in the planned giving field for such organizations as the College of the Holy Cross, WGBH Educational Foundation and the Boston Foundation. She is frequent
speaker on planned giving topics and have authored articles for Trusts & Estates on the philanthropic legacies of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Louis Armstrong, James Brown and Ray Charles.

Session 3: Hitching The Estate Planning Wagon To The Right Horse: Who Should Be The Trustee?
This session will focus on how advisors can best counsel their clients on naming the appropriate trustee. We will discuss the various options available along with the pros and cons of each type of fiduciary. Participants should feel free to bring their questions and current client issues relating to trustee selection to the session.
Presented By: Sarah M. Allen became a shareholder and Director of Rice, Heard & Bigelow, Inc. in 2014. Prior to joining the firm, she was a partner in the Boston law firm of Pabian & Russell, LLC. At Pabian & Russell, Sarah served as co-manager of the firm’s estate planning and administration department. Sarah graduated with a Bachelor of Science summa cum laude from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in 2000, earned a J.D. from Boston University School of Law in 2004 and received a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation from Boston University School of Law in 2014. In 2020, Sarah was awarded the Accredited Estate Planning (AEP) designation. She regularly serves as a lecturer for Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, the Boston Bar Association and the Boston Estate Planning Council on various estate planning and trust administration topics. Sarah is a Past President of the Boston Estate Planning Council (BEPC). She is a member of the Professional Advisors Council (PAC) for the Boston Foundation and is the former Co-Chair of the Boston Foundation’s Professional Advisors Network (PAN).

Mel will discuss key considerations for non-US persons considering US residency and vice versa, as well as planning strategies that can be employed to reduce tax and other consequences of changing domicile.
Presented By: Melvin A. Warshaw, Esq. has nearly 40 years of experience as an estate planning and tax lawyer. He currently represents US and non-US families and companies on a wide range of personal and business tax matters, including cross-border income and estate tax planning, corporate and partnership tax issues, S corporations and income taxation of trusts and estates.

Session 5: Qualified Small Business Stock
IRC Section 1202 – One Code section that all advisors should know. Qualified small business stock, Code Section 1202, has been around for almost 30 years and yet many advisors do not know the benefit that could save their client hundreds of thousands of dollars. We will discuss the specifics of Sec. 1202, including entity formation, debt to equity conversions, gifting and state tax planning. We will also explore planning options available when the 5 year holding period for QSBS has not been met and exercising options to set the acquisition date of QSB stock.

rience providing income, estate and gift tax planning, consulting services, and tax compliance. Her clients include high net worth individuals, trusts, private foundations, expatriates and closely held businesses. Laura’s areas of
expertise include tax planning and compliance for high net worth individuals, and international taxation for individuals. She collaborates with her clients’ other advisors, working as a team to ensure that the clients’ goals are
met. She has experience advising clients on such issues as stock options and compensation planning, philanthropic planning alternatives, and foreign reporting related to hedge fund and trading investments. Laura advises individuals
with international elements to their tax situation. She consults with clients about how to manage their global, income, and estate tax liabilities, which include expatriate taxation, foreign property, and international investments.
She also has experience with international estate planning, and collaborates with estate attorneys in this area.

BEPC issues certificates of completion for educational events. The certificates list the number of CPE credit hours or CE credits awarded for the event. The certificate will also state if the seminar was approved by the CFP Board for CE credit.
